A compact apartment, located in a 1920s building overlooking a quiet street near the Central Station, becomes the retreat of a young couple of doctors in search of an intimate, quiet, and functional space.

The request was clear: to carry out a light renovation, keeping costs down, without sacrificing functionality, character, or respect for the original spirit of the space.

The project thus took shape based on a core principle: not to distort the identity of the apartment, but to enhance its existing architectural qualities.

Upon entering the living area, two features immediately stand out: the wall facing the street and the large terrace is lined with three French doors that flood the entire space with natural light.

Moreover the visual and functional connection between the living room and the kitchen is ensured by an opening with a swing door, which was intentionally preserved.

This element not only facilitates the flow of light and movement between rooms, but also creates a striking, elongated visual axis.

Some of the original, custom-made furnishings integrated into the structure of the apartment were also preserved and restored.

A first low cabinet, with rounded doors and corners, is set into a central niche framed by two lateral passages.

The geometry of the wall partition evokes that of a portal, which was intentionally emphasized through the use of color.

A second portal, also highlighted with color, marks the transition between the dining area and the kitchen workspace.

The intervention embraced a subtractive approach, allowing the existing architectural elements to take center stage within a space characterized by light, neutral tones.

The portals, highlighted by a different hue from the dominant white, play a central role in defining the space, adding depth, rhythm, and identity to the home.

The result is an apartment that regains balance and harmony, where every choice – from preserving the swing door to enhancing the existing furnishings – tells a story of respect for the past, while also addressing the contemporary needs of its inhabitants.
